They keep taking me to these dang English lessons
These speech therapy lessons
These uncomfortable lessons
This instructor
she doesn’t look like me
she doesn’t think like me
she doesn’t talk like me
I don’t talk
But I think And I write And I can talk I just choose not to talk around those I don’t trust And she didn’t earn my trust I’m like the Duke of Hastings from Bridgerton We share such odd traits with each other No native language Yet our English teachers always quick to hype us up We can trust them because they know how…
Sherrilyn Ifill, author of a book on the legacy of lynching, reminds us that the lynchings of African Americans in the United States were often carried out in the public square, with hundreds and sometimes thousands of people watching. Surely not all of these observers were celebrating. Some were likely horrified, but very few tried to intervene. –– Catherine A. Sanderson & Harvard, Why We Act
Three buttons. Beep beep beep. The first time I ever hear the telephone ring to the tune of 911 I am a preschool student peaking my face beneath the curtains in Reading, Pennsylvania’s Farming…
Now those memories come back to haunt me — they haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don’t come true — or is it something worse?
November was always a special time of the year in the Davis family household. Mother’s birthday had just passed, father’s family would be coming into town for Thanksgiving. That succulent Virginia aroma filled our house for days as our parents worked together to put together a meal all could enjoy. Juicy turkey split between light and dark, cranberries, stuffing, and gravy; all ingredients that would be placed onto rolls…
Election Day 2012. November 6. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden Jr. held a chance to make history times two. Their competitor on the grandest stage of America would be the creator of Obamacare himself: Governor Willard Romney. The American people stood a chance to show the world that despite the rampant and pervasive history of racism within our country, the first African American President could be elected not once but twice. …

On June 2, 2020, I met my biological maternal grandmother for the first time. Only six days later, I sent a text asking “Any obituary found for Willmore/Definitive answer on his death?” in response to the news that Theodore Willmore, my biological maternal grandfather, died of COVID–19. The death of my biological grandfather made me feel… awkward. I didn’t know what to feel at the time. I never met him, Judge Robert E. Simpson, Jr. ruled on November 30, 1999, that my biological family had their rights to Kordel Kristopher Hineline terminated forever. …
There is something special about a great non-fiction story. Classic novels that I have read such as To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby and Lord of the Flies are detailed and include memorable characters. These stories are all fiction, however, and no matter how much they may move somebody or how great they may be, these stories will never be real events from history. What is special about a great non-fiction story is that they are indeed real events from history, and very often it was the author themselves that took a part in the events.

In 1920, the League of Nations was created by the United States to ensure that there could be a role for collective security in the international system. Essentially, the League of Nations ended up being a failure, starting with the Ethiopian and Manchurian crises and ending with the beginning of World War II. The League was supposed to give way for a larger role for ethics in international affairs, but many states went against it. The League of Nations set a precedent for the international system that there is certainly a role for ethics in international affairs.

I thought it was some sort of sick joke when a Beta Theta Pi fraternity brother told me that their fraternity house advisor was the Penn State football Head Athletic Trainer and university’s Assistant Athletic Director. “No, really, he lives in the house. He’s going through a divorce and the alumni decided to allow him to live here.” Still, after being filled in on the situation, I thought this must be some sort of part-time living arrangement so he can have a brisk walk to work at the Lasch building every weekday morning.
That fraternity house is Beta Theta Pi…
